Под историей Великой Отечественной войны обычно понимают историю боевых действий и подвигов солдат, сражавшихся на фронте. Однако одним из важнейших факторов, позволивших Красной армии сдержать наступление немецких войск и перейти в контрнаступление, были усилия многих людей и прежде всего женщин, подростков и пожилых людей, находившихся в те годы в тылу. Историки Венди Голдман и Дональд Фильцер в своей книге исследуют историю тотальной войны за линией фронта. Как государству удалось мобилизовать за столь короткий срок все свои ресурсы, включая труд? Эффективно ли была организована работа государственных органов, отвечавших за проведение экстренных инициатив? Какую роль в жизни тыла играли коррупция чиновников и черный рынок? И как людям удавалось пережить чудовищные лишения – голод, тяжелый труд и вспышки эпидемий? Опираясь на обширный корпус недавно обнародованных архивных документов, авторы рассматривают взаимоотношения, которые сложились между советским государством и обществом в этот драматический период – от немецкого вторжения, начала массовой эвакуации и до восстановления страны. Венди Голдман – почетный профессор Пола Меллона в Университете Карнеги-Меллона. Дональд Фильцер – заслуженный профессор Университета Восточного Лондона.
