После взлета в 1980-х и падения в 1990-х жанр хоррор начал умеренный и вместе с тем уверенный подъем в 2000-х гг. Впрочем, ученые еще в 2010 г. констатировали, что критики и поклонники фильмов ужасов рассуждали о жанре в категориях «кризиса». Но вскоре все изменилось. Хоррор расцвел и пережил ренессанс. Появились новые авторы (Роберт Эггерс, Джордан Пил, Ари Астер), новые субжанры (метахоррор, постхоррор, фолк-хоррор), многие классические фильмы и франшизы получили ремейки и ребуты («Пила», «Крик», сериал «Сумеречная зона»). Эти процессы преимущественно на американском материале исследует в своей новой книге философ и киновед Александр Павлов. Особое внимание уделяется изменениям в характере политизации фильмов ужасов, которые вот уже пятьдесят лет отражают многочисленные проблемы разных обществ.
